Student health insurance
A student far from home needs health cover that works the day they land, without a parent beside them to sort it out.

What to compare in a health plan
Plans differ in the details below. We go through each one with you before you choose.
| Detail | What it means | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Deductible | The amount you pay yourself before the plan starts paying. | Is there one, and is it charged per claim or per year? |
| Coverage limit | The most the plan will pay in total during the policy. | Is the limit high enough for a hospital stay? |
| Hospital and emergency | Emergency room visits, hospital stays, surgery and ambulance. | Are all of these covered in full? |
| Doctor and clinic visits | Ordinary appointments for illness, tests and X-rays. | Is there a limit on the number of visits? |
| Prescription medicine | Medicine prescribed by a doctor in Canada. | What share is paid, and up to what amount? |
| Dental | Plans often cover dental emergencies and accidents. Check-ups and cleaning are usually limited or an optional extra. | Is routine dental care included, or only emergencies? |
| Vision | Eye exams and glasses, where a plan includes them. | Is an eye exam covered, and how often? |
| Mental health | Visits to a psychologist or counsellor. | How many sessions are covered? |
| Existing conditions | Health problems the student had before the policy started. | Are they covered, excluded or covered after a waiting period? |
| Travel | Trips home and travel outside Canada during the policy. | Is the student covered on holidays and school trips abroad? |
| Paying the bill | Some clinics bill the insurer directly. Otherwise you pay first and claim the money back. | Does the plan offer direct billing near the school? |
Cover, limits and prices depend on the insurer and the plan. The policy document is always the final word.
