Frequently asked questions
The basics of custodianship for minors studying in Canada.
Who needs a custodian?
A minor student who comes to Canada to study without a parent or legal guardian. A custodian is required for students under the age of majority, which is 18 or 19 depending on the province.
Who can be a custodian?
A responsible adult who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and lives in Canada. All SAY Education custodians are Canadian citizens with no criminal background. They are established professionals, such as health care professionals, finance managers, education consultants and teachers, and have lived in their area for more than 10 years.
My child will live with me in Canada. Why would we need a custodian?
Some schools and study permit applications may still ask for a custodian when the accompanying parent is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Our Basic level is designed for this situation.
Who is considered a minor in Canada?
Each province or territory sets the age of majority. Anyone under that age when they arrive in Canada is a minor child.
- 18: Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan.
- 19: British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon.
What is the difference between custodianship and guardianship?
For a minor's study permit application, "custodianship" is the preferred term. Custodianship covers custody and care arrangements for the student. Guardianship involves managing a person's affairs. In most cases the custodian makes arrangements with the parents and acts as an official contact, and is not responsible for day-to-day supervision.
What is a custodianship declaration?
A notarized form, mandatory in certain situations, signed by the parents or legal guardians in the minor's home country and by the custodian in Canada. It confirms that the custodian will take responsibility for the minor in an emergency.
How much does custodianship cost?
From $900 to $5,900 per year, depending on the level of care and where the student lives. Use the fee finder to see the exact price.
What if the study permit is refused or we cancel?
A refused study permit entitles you to a partial refund. Once the custodianship documents have been issued, a cancellation before arrival is not refundable, and requests after arrival are reviewed case by case. Read the refund and cancellation policy.
How do I pay?
By email transfer within Canada, by credit card, PayPal or Wise through the link on your invoice, or by bank wire. See the payment instructions.
Where are your custodians?
Mainly in Ontario and British Columbia, including Toronto and the GTA, Barrie, Niagara Falls, Ottawa, Vancouver and Victoria. We also cover other major Canadian cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal and Halifax. See the full list.
Can you help with the study permit too?
Yes. A licensed RCIC immigration consultant prepares study permit, temporary resident visa and extension applications, with 30% off regular rates for custodianship clients.
Do documents need to be translated?
No. Custodianship documents are notarized in a live online meeting with a Canadian notary, so translation through a Canadian notary is not needed.
